The Castle Inn at Lydford

Lydford a short walk

Starts from: The pub

Distance: 2 miles

Difficulty: Very easy

Description: A short walk around the village using the green lanes passing an ancient spring  an ancient gaol and a not so ancient but disused  railway viaduct 

The Lydford Viaduct Walk

Starts from: High Down Car park

Distance 6 miles.

Difficulty: A moderate part open moorland  walk.

Description: A walk that will take you out on to the open moor and back under Lydford viaduct to then make a short excursion into the village to visit the castle.

Walk 12 of the West Devon Way Lydford to Lake

Starts from: The village

Distance: 7.6 miles

Difficulty: A moderate part open moor walk with no steep hills only a gentle uphill walk.

Description: The walk will take you through Lydford and out to Lake passing The Bearslake Inn. The return is via the Granite Way cycle track and then onto the moor and along the King Wall and back into Lydford using ancient green lanes.

The Irishmans Wall walk 

Starts from: Okehampton station

Distance: 7 miles

Difficulty: Walking up the Irishman’s wall is a bit strenuous otherwise a moderate walk

Description: Although the walk description starts from Okehampton station being a circular walk you can start and end at the Tors Inn as there is plenty of parking close by. The whole walk is outside Okehampton range Danger Area so can be walked at anytime and has to be one of the best Dartmoor walks incorporating a river bank walk with waterfalls open moorland walking and fine views and a pub.

Merrivale and the Walkham Valley

Distance: 7 miles

Difficulty: A moderate mostly moorland walk.

Description: This walk will take you out and back through the Walkham valley passing some magnificent tors and also walking on the old railway.

Two Bridges Hotel at Two Bridges Nr Princetown

Crockern Tor and Wistmans Wood

Starts from: The quarry carpark opposite the hotel

Distance: 4 miles 

Difficulty: Easy Moorland walk although the exceptionally well used track to Wistmans Wood is a bit rocky in places.

Description: Wistmans wood must be visited by 1000 people a week in the summer very few of whom will think to go and  see the massive granite seat of the Stannary Parliament or the fine views from Longaford Tor or even know of the Buller Stone.

Skylark Inn at Clearbrook

Yelverton to Clearbrook and the Harrowbeer wartime airfield

Starts from: Yelverton if you are going by bus but can start at the pub if you have a car.

Distance: 4.5 miles

Difficulty: An easy walk with the first 1.7 miles suitable for a wheelchairs.

Description: You will walk next to the Plymouth and the Devonport leat and along the Plymouth and Dartmoor Tramway that opened in 1823. Some of the granite sleepers are still visible. You will walk next to the Princetown Railway opened in 1883 and closed in 1956. At the end of the walk you will visit Roborough Rock and walk over the wartime airfield of Harrowbeer passing the dispersal or blast bays where the aircraft were stored for safety.

Bridestowe Sourton Tors and the Highwayman

Starts from: The church in the village or the pub.

Distance: 6 miles

Difficulty: A moderate moorland walk 

Description: A walk that will take you to the top of Sourton Tors for a fine moorland walk with stunning views. The return passes the Highwayman said to be Britain’s must unusual pub but does have limited opening hours.

Horrabridge to Huckworthy Bridge The oak tree walk

Starts from: The pub or village centre 

Distance: 5 miles

Difficulty: A moderate countryside walk.

Description: A walk that takes you out of the village going past some splendid examples of the English oak tree and visiting a most picturesque ancient bridge on your way back. A bit of minor  road walking but mostly on footpaths.

Distance: 4.8 miles

Difficulty: A easy rural walk with just one short steep hill.

Description: A delightful rural walk crossing bridged streams, walking across Plasterdown and passing by some ancient granite stiles. 

Royal Oak at Meavy

Starts from: The pub

Distance: 4.8 miles

Difficulty: Moderate walk partly using moorland sheep tracks.

Description: A walk that will take you out past Burrator reservoir and on to Sheeps tor see find if you can the Pixie house hidden in the rocks and clitter. See the bluebell wood in May.

Meavy to Burrator Reservoir

Starts from: The pub

Distance: 2.5 miles

Difficulty: A fairly easy walk but it is up hill at the start.

Description : You will walk the disused track bed of the railway that once served Princetown  and visit the waterfall from the Devonport leat that now flows into the reservoir. On the way back you may well pass an ice cream van but you will walk through a  lovely wooded  and see writing etched into a wall.

Brisworthy Stone Circle

Starts from: The pub

Distance: 5.25 miles

Difficulty: Generally an easy part moorland walk

Description: From Meavy green the walk  goes via the hamlet of Loveton  and on to Brisworthy where you will find the restored stone circle.  You will twice cross the Loveton Brook using small granite footbridges and on your return to Meavy cross the River Meavy either by the Higher Meavy Bridge or some stepping stones if the river is low enough.

Starts at: Tor Royal lane but could start at the pub.

Distance: 6 miles

Difficulty: It’s not difficult but it is likely to be wet. No steep hills but there is open moor walking.

Description: A 6 mile  Dartmoor walk that uses footpaths and bridleways, but also takes you across the open moor, to find ancient burial chambers. In this instance it would be   useful if you did have an ordnance survey map with you as it shows the location of the cist and cairns which you will be visiting.  You will walk the Conchies road and pass through ancient and extensive tin mining. You will need to have some decent waterproof walking boots for you will encounter some areas of quite boggy ground.  This walk must be done in good weather conditions with good distant visibility and if possible following a week of dry weather.

A village and Dartmoor fringe walk

Starts from: Sticklepath village

Distance : 4.5 miles

Difficulty: There are some short but  quite steep ups and downs so a good moderate walk.

Description: This is a 4.5 mile walk that starts in the village of Sticklepath. There is plenty of street parking  together with a small car park at the rear of the National Trust Finch Foundry.  The walk is quite steep in places but most  are short sharp ups and downs. You will cross over the River Taw and skim the edge of Cosdon Hill. You will also walk past 3 other pubs Kings Arms South Zeal  The Oxenham Arms South Zeal and the Devonshire at Sticklepath so spoilt for choice for a drink.

Distance: 7 miles

Difficulty: A moderate walk with one steep up.

Description: A rural walk using footpaths and bridleways to take you around the southern part of the Bere Peninsular, crossing railways and walking by the Tavy and Tamar rivers on the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail

 

Peter Tavy Inn at Peter Tavy Nr Tavistock

West Devon Way Walk 10

Starts from: The village

Distance: 3 or 6 miles

Difficulty: The short walk is easy the longer walk is moderate walking on open moorland.

Description: A 3 mile rural walk almost to Mary Tavy and then back to Peter Tavy or a 6 mile walk to take in the Devon United mine and the antiquities on White tor.

Tamar Inn at Calstock

Tamar valley walk 4 Calstock to Cotehele 

Starts from: Slipway opposite the pub

Distance: 3.5 miles or 7 miles

Difficulty: Some ups and downs but generally a moderate rural walk

Description: The walk will take you to Okel Tor mine and then up to the site of the Roman fort then down to walk along the old mineral railway. Then back to Calstock or go on  an extra 4 mile loop to visit Cotehele. 

The Royal at Horsebridge on the river Tamar

Tamar Valley walk 10 Horsebridge to New Bridge

Starts from: The pub

Distance : 9.3 miles

Difficulty: Moderate rural walk using minor roads but mostly footpaths.

Description: A walk that crosses the Tamar via two ancient bridges passing through many of the mines that make up the Tamar valley Mining Heritage. A lovely day out in the Tamar Valley. Suggest allow about 5 hours including rests. Lunch at the Royal and back for dinner?

 

Drake Manor Inn at Buckland Monachorum

Starts from: Long ash Garden centre but could be from the pub. 

Distance: 5.5miles

Difficulty: Easy rural walk with just one steep road to walk up. 

Description: A walk around and also through the village of Buckland Monachorum a couple of miles down the hill from Yelverton. The walk will take you along the river Tavy through farmland  moorland and along some quiet lanes. You will pass by an Iron Age hill fort

Yelverton to Buckland and back

Starts from: Harrowbeer Airfield Yelverton but could be from the pub.

Distance: 6 miles

Difficulty: Easy rural walk with no steep hills.

Description: This walk will take you from Yelverton Rock out across Roborough Down along footpaths bridleways and quiet country lanes to Buckland Monachorum and then back to Yelverton via the Garden House and the Harrowbeer wartime airfield. Starting at Roborough Rock the Drake Manor is about a 2 hour walk.

Fingle Bridge Inn nr Drewsteignton

Castle Drogo to Fingle Bridge 

Starts from:  Either Castle Drogo or Fingle Bridge

Distance: 4 miles.

Difficulty: Mostly an easy riverside walk.

Description: A fabulous scenic 4 mile 2 hour circular walk through the Teign Valley starting at either Castle Drogo or Fingle bridge. A clockwise walk avoiding a long steep uphill path.
