BuStop Walks

There are loads of lovely walks between Plymouth and Tavistock but I have selected 6 for you using the No.1 stagecoach bus that runs approximately every 20 mins between Plymouth and Tavistock. All you need do is to check the Number 1 bus timetable   hop on the bus when it comes, and away you go.

Walk 7 uses the 56 City bus that drives around the villages calling in at Yelverton and Meavy

Walk 8 uses the 118 that goes from Tavistock to Okehampton.

Walks 9 10 and 11 uses the 79 or 79A  that goes between Tavistock and Callington.

Some walks are circular and coming back to the same bus stop and some are  linear walking one from bus stop to another one.

Walk 1 Crownhill to Roborough via Tamerton Foliot  a 6.5 mile linear walk or 3.5 if you return from Tamerton. Perhaps best called a countryside city walk as the majority of the walk is through woodland. You start at the Crownhill low level bus stop and walk to Roborough although as you pass through Tamerton Foliot you have the opportunity of getting the bus back to Crownhill from there for a shorter walk.

Walk 2 Woolwell to Derriford Hospital is a 5.7 mile linear walk from the Woolwell roundabout next to the Tesco Store to Derriford Hospital and takes you via the river Plym. A large part of the walk is on an ancient tramway that is also used in Walk 3. There is hardly any road walking despite going through the Estover estate.

Walk 3 Around Roborough Down is a circular walk of  just under 7 miles so is quite a long walk but two thirds of it is either level or downhill. You do get to walk through an old railway tunnel, along an even older tramway and get to see what some believe to be an iron age  hill fort just 50m from the A386 that you probably never knew existed.

Walk  4 from Yelverton to Clearbrook is a 4.5 mile circular walk that also uses the ancient tramway but also the route 27 Cycle track and takes you  right past the Skylark pub and down to the river Meavy and then back to Yelverton via the Harrowbeer wartime airfield and Roborough Rock.

Walk 5 is from Horrabridge  and is called the Three Bridges walk  it’s a linear walk of about about 3.5 miles and takes in Drakes Trail cycle track and a path by the river as well as going under or over 3 bridges.

Walk 6 Anderton Lay-by Whitchurch Tavistock to Double Waters. Its a circular walk of about 6 miles or 5 miles if you take the short cut back to the bus stop. You will walk on Drakes Trail through Grenofen Tunnel over Gem bridge and the newly replaced (2023) bridge at Double Waters. The full walk takes you along the river Walkham.

Walk 7  Meavy to Burrator (See Pub Walks) 2.5 miles or The Pixie House (See Dartmoor Walks) 5 miles Take the No. 1 bus to Yelverton then catch the 11.50 No. 56  to Meavy. Do the walk visit the pub while you wait for the No.56 at  14.46 or 16.46 to get back to Yelverton.  If you miss the bus back its only a 30 min walk to Yelverton from Meavy.

Walk 8 Brentor Parish walk. This walk will take you up to the top of Brentor and see the view from the church on top. It’s called the Brentor Parish Walk and can be found in Village and Countryside Walks which starts in the car park close to the church. However this is also a BuStop walk using the 118 Tavistock to Okehampton bus which means you have to get off in the middle of North Brentor village and start the walk from here by following the bus up the hill. Scroll down to where the walk turns left in the middle of North Brentor village. Its a circular walk so you will come back here you just need to check the bus times before you set off. The bus back to Tavistock runs every hour at 1 minute past the hour except for 1pm 3pm and 6pm. If you catch the 12.20 118 from Tavistock to Okehampton get off at North Brentor War Memorial enjoy the walk and the view from the church and get back to North Brentor to catch the 16.01 back to Tavistock.

Walk 9 Gulworthy to Tavistock via the canal. For this 3 mile walk you will need to catch a bus from Tavistock Bus Station out to The Harvest Home which was once  a pub on the A390. The walk from there takes you back along the Tavistock canal all the way into the middle of Tavistock.

Walk 10 Calstock   with a loop to Cotehele

Take the bus from Tavistock bus station to Calstock. You are given a choice of a long or short walk. The short walk will take about an hour and a half but allow another half hour to explore Okel Tor mine. The 79 bus is mostly an hourly service  so if you miss it there is always the Tamar Inn to sit in to wait for the next one.

Walk 11 Gunnislake Mines and manure.  Take the 79 bus to Gunnislake station and explore the Tamar Valley on this 5 mile walk that uses the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail

A view of the Walkham Valley that you will see on Walk 6
